If you own or have owned a Chow Chow you will know that they are not big walkers. Chow Chows will benefit from a 10 to 20 minute walk a few times a day to help with there well being and keep them active. Our majestic canines are well known for there independent spirit & love of exploring at there own pace, its important to be patient with them and allow them to explore while on a walk.
To ensure that their adventures are both safe and fun, equipping yourself with the right gear is essential. Following our community’s recommendations we have created a list of the top outdoor must haves for your Chow Chow.
Portable water bottle & bowl
Hydration is key for your Chow Chow, especially when you are out and about. Portable water bottles and bowls are a convenient solution to ensuring that your Chow Chow stays hydrated when walking especially in the warmer weather. Having easy access to water for your Chow Chow not only keeps them comfortable during exercise but can also support their overall health and help prevent heatstroke and dehydration. We highly recommend the Pecute dog water bottle, a convenient item that merges a bottle and bowl into one, making it easier to carry and serve water to your chow chow dog.
Durable and weather resistance harness
What is the best harness for my Chow Chow? an often seen question within our community and a question you can learn more about in our blog, How To Choose The Best Harness For Your Chow Chow: A Comprehensive Guide. Chow Chows are a unique breed and although they may look cute and fluffy on the outside, they are stubborn & very independent. Chow Chows tend to take the lead on walks, choosing a harness to avoid to much pull and keep you in control is essential. The Julius K9 harness is a top recommendation from various owners within our community including ourselves, the adjustable straps allow for a perfect & comfortable fit no matter the size of your Chow Chow.
Paw protection
Keeping your Chow Chows paws protected during walks is crucial, especially in extreme weather conditions. In the hot weather, paths can become very hot, potentially causing burns and discomfort to your dog’s paws. We recommend not taking your dogs out during peak times of the day in the summer but even earlier or later in the day the path can be hot. During the winter months protecting your Chow against ice, snow, and de-icing chemicals that can be very harmful can lead to cracked or bleeding paw pads. To protect them, consider using dog booties which act as a barrier against the cold.
Retractable dog lead
Using a retractable dog lead for your Chow Chow during walks offers the perfect blend of freedom and control. As any Chow owner knows, our inquisitive dogs love to sniff everything in their path, indulging their natural curiosity and enhancing their walking experience. A retractable lead allows your Chow Chow the freedom to explore and sniff to their heart’s content, extending their range of movement without sacrificing safety. This ensures a satisfying walk for your pet, tapping into their instinctual need to investigate, while you retain the ability to reel them in when needed, ensuring their safety and the safety of others around.
